The Origin Cycle performances came at the culmination of a remarkable project organised by soprano Jane Sheldon and historian of science, Peter Godfrey-Smith. Part of the conception of The Origin Cycle, organised to coincide with celebrations of major Charles Darwin anniversaries in 2009, was that it be performed in multiple venues and where possible with appropriate scientific connections. The Sydney performance took place at the Australian Museum, beneath the giant skeleton of an extinct marine mammal providing a dramatic backdrop. The eight compositions of varying styles and textures were complex and engaging and well arranged to create a thoughtful musical narrative, creating suggestive connections between the evolution of species and the evolution of musical styles, and between scientific and artistic ways of conceiving of the world. This performance from singer Jane Sheldon and Ensemble Offspring conducted by Roland Peelman had excellent accuracy and tonal polish.
