Composers: Ricky Edwards

Ricky Edwards is an Australian born composer who began working in film and television in 1996. Over the years he has gained a reputation as one of Australia's most well regarded film and television music score composers as well as one of Australia's leading orchestrators.

Ricky began studying piano at the age of six. By the time he was in his twenties he had appeared regularly as a soloist performing concerti by Prokofiev, Saint-Saens and Mozart, as well as appearing in recitals and recordings as a chamber musician. He represented the University of Tasmania as a performer, broadcasting solo repertoire for radio. He can be heard as a soloist and conductor on the soundtrack for the feature film, 'Shine' (1995).

He held a full-time position as a french horn player with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen. He also became interested in arranging and orchestrating at that time, fueled by his experience and enthusiasm playing in the orchestra. He graduated from the University Of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Music in 1985 with a major in piano.

Over the years Ricky has developed a reputation among his peers as a valuable team member. He is often commissioned by colleagues as well as film makers as a composer, orchestrator, conductor and consultant.

In the last six years Ricky's work has included seven television series (h2o Just Add Water Series 1-3, The Elephant Princess Series 1-2, Lightning Point Series 1 and Mal.Com Series 1) as well as a number of documentaries. To date his orchestration credits included principal orchestrator on Australia (2008), Legend Of The Guardians (2010), Sanctum (2011), The Bank Job (2008), Aquamarine (2006), Shine (1996) and many more.

Composer: Ric Formosa

Ric Formosa has worked extensively as composer,  orchestrator, conductor, music producer and scoring consultant on numerous Australian and international feature films, as well as for television and the stage. He has collaborated closely with fellow composer David Hirschfelder orchestrating, conducting and co-producing the scores for BAFTA award-winning film "Strictly Ballroom" and Oscar-nominated "Elizabeth". Together with Hirschfelder, Formosa has also composed the score for Australian movie thriller "Tunnel Vision". He has composed original music for episodes of the "Aladdin" TV series for Disney TV in Los Angeles. Ric has also provided the original score for the 1998 Melbourne Theatre Company production of Hannie Rayson's award-winning play "Hotel Sorrento", with a cast featuring some of Australia's finest actors. Since 2002, he has been busy composing original music for several highly successful Australian-made international teenage action drama television shows, most notably, “Pirate Islands”, on-air on NBC/Fox in the U.S., and in Europe, Japan and Australia, for which he won the Australian Performing Right Association’s Best Score Award, as well as “Wicked Science” series 1 and 2, and “Scooter – Secret Agent”. In 2003, Ric also composed a large orchestral score, performed by members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for the “Terminator 3” video game for Atari in Santa Monica, California, and for the “Transformers” video game, for Atari in Melbourne. More recent projects include TV scores for the “h2o” series 1, 2 and 3, The Elephant Princess series 1 and 2, and Lightning Point series 1 for Jonathan M. Shiff Productions.

Composer: David Hirschfelder

After graduating from Ballarat Grammar School in 1976, David Hirschfelder quickly making waves as a musical prodigy, with 1983 seeing him travel abroad to perform his original works at the Montrieux Jazz Festival. From the mid-80s to early-90s, David became the musical brain behind many of Australia's most successful touring and recording projects, including John Farnham's 1988 CLASSIC JACK tour, featuring the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the record-breaking JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR arena spectacular in 1992. Also in that year, David's first film-score for Baz Luhrmann's STRICTLY BALLROOM won a BAFTA (British Academy) award. In 1996 David received his first Oscar nomination for his SHINE score and in 1998 a further Oscar nomination for ELIZABETH. Hirschfelder is now recognised globally as Australia's most celebrated and renowned film-score composer. His recent scores include Luhrmann's AUSTRALIA, Zack Snyder's LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS, and James Cameron's SANCTUM.

Composer: Neil Sutherland

Born in New Zealand, Neil Sutherland has been creating music since the age of 5, having trained classically in piano until his teens. Honing his performing and writing skills in various bands, he moved to Australia at 21 years of age, to fulfill a publishing & recording deal with Polygram Records. From there, he moved into composing for music for film & TV, working predominately for Beyond 2000.

Since then, Neil has created some of Australia’s most memorable themes, and is committed to creating quality music – the right score no matter what style – contemporary or otherwise.

Neil’s music scores have played a vital role in many popular shows, both in Australia and abroad, culminating in winning numerous Screen Music Awards for Most Performed Screen Composer – both in Australia and Overseas. Some notable examples include:-

‘Colour of War – The Anzacs’ – an award winning, full orchestral score. ‘Border Security’ – the highest rating Australian TV Show on Australia Television, with nearly 2.2 million viewers each week. ‘Mythbusters’ – a worldwide success story which keeps getting bigger.
