Christmas Songs and Carols

If you wish to photocopy or print the words and/or print music of a Christmas carol or song, please consider the following issues:

  • If the carol is traditional (TRAD) or in the public domain (PD), you may write out the words/melody line and photocopy them without permission. If you want to photocopy the print music of a TRAD or PD work, you need to check whether the edition you are using is out of copyright (publication date of over 25 years ago). If the publication is in copyright you will need to get permission from the copyright owner to use it.
  • If the song is in copyright, you must contact the copyright owner (usually a music publisher) of the work for permission to use it.
  • If you want to make your own arrangement of a piece that is in copyright, you must contact the publisher that controls the work for permission to use it.
  • If you want a licence to perform the songs, check with APRA|AMCOS' Licensing Services Department. If you are simply singing non-copyright material, this is not necessary.

If you wish to reprint or photocopy the words and/or the music or make a new arrangement of any copyright work, you must obtain permission from the appropriate copyright owner.

If a work is not on any of the lists, please contact APRA|AMCOS and we will research the copyright status of the work for you.
