On-demand music and other services

APRA|AMCOS have schemes which allow content providers to make available a range of on-demand applications via streaming. These include DJ mixes (Discrete Music Mixes), individually accessible full length songs or clips (excerpts of up to 30 seconds music), music videos and movie trailers.

  • On-demand Music Service Licence

The licence fee is based on 8.5% of the licensee’s gross revenue, subject to a minimum fee calculated in accordance with the level of music use for:
    • Music news programs
    • Discrete music mixes
    • Clips
    • Songs and;
    • Movie Trailers

We also have other licence schemes for on-demand applications available for private individuals and for websites which only want to use a small amount of music. Please contact us for further information on criteria and restrictions.

  • On-demand Music Preview Service (clips only)
Covers the reproduction and communication of music clips of up to 30 seconds, for the purpose of previewing music that is offered for sale as a physical product. This licence may also be used to preview music that is offered for sale as sheet music, or the like.
  • On-demand Movie Preview Service
Covers the communication of any musical work included in a movie trailer. Note this licence does NOT cover the synchronisation of music with film in the trailer. Fees are charged on the number of movie trailers made available online
  • Looped Background Music (Websites) Covers the use of looped background music on a website. The following restrictions apply:
  • looped background music must be completely independent of a user’s progress through a website subject to:
    • a minimum of three separate works (and no more than fifteen) must be used in any background music loop; and
    • that the works are programmed to play 'randomly' - each time a user enters the site.

APRA|AMCOS charges a fee for each Background Music Licence

We also have other Looped Background Music licences available upon request, for private individual websites and not-for-profit organisations who are registered as such.

If the use you require is outside of these limitations (for example, you only want the one song to play on a loop) then you will need to seek clearance for the reproduction of this work directly from the copyright owners. APRA|AMCOS’ Research Service can  help you identify the relevant copyright owners and obtain their contact details. Contact us on (02) 9935 7900 and ask for our Research Facility or email .

Important Note:

APRA|AMCOS receives many requests to use of a single piece of music on the opening page of a website – in many cases, in a flash animation file.

Use of any copyright musical work – other than Production Music - in this context is outside of the mandate APRA|AMCOS has from its members and must be cleared directly with the relevant copyright owners(s).

Our Research Service can assist with identifying the owner(s) of the work. Email:

Music used in this context also exercises the APRA right of communication, and in addition to a reproduction licence, an APRA communication licence is also required. For more information, please contact the online licensing team on (02) 9935 7900 or email .

These licences are currently under review.
