Glossary of Terms

AMCOS is the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners’ Society.

APRA is the Australasian Performing Right Association.

ARIA is the Australian Recording Industry Association.

PPCA is the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia.

Broadcast means a broadcast within the meaning of section 10(1) of the Copyright Act (1968).

Chamber Music Work means an instrumental work scored for 10 or fewer instruments. An example: Matthew Hindson’s Rush for string quartet and oboe.

Choral Sheet is a separately published choral work of less than 20 minutes’ duration. An example: For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter for SATB choir.

Download means the process of making a digital copy of audio or audio visual materials from the Intranet onto a storage device including but not limited to a personal computer hard drive, server, mobile phone or peripheral device. An example: downloading listening examples from the intranet system.

Dramatic Context means in conjunction with acting, costumes, scenic accessories and scripted dialogue or other dramatic effects, or as a ballet. An example: performances where dancing, costumes and music is involved such as in end of year showcases.

Educational Purposes means use in connection with the educational activities or course of study/research of a school or university. An example: playing music at a school or university Open Day.

Grand Right Work is an opera, operetta, musical play, revue or pantomime to the extent that it consists of musical works and associated with lyrics written expressly for it. An example: Grease the Musical, Cats.

Intranet means a secure local area network of interconnected computers at a school or university, sharing a common server, accessible only to students and/or staff of that school or university and unable to be accessed by members of the general public. An example: a Learning Management System.

Music Tutorial means a learn to play style vocal or instrumental tutor book or a musicianship, theory or any other book that includes text as well as music. Example: A Tune A Day tutorial books and Norton Anthology of Music anthology books.

Production Music Work means any musical work for which AMCOS is granted the right to licence reproductions of the sound recording of that work.

Reprographic Reproduction means any duplicating or copying process but does not include computer storage or retrieval.

School Event means an event organised or authorised by the school including live performance by students or an event or function connected with the school – even if it is not on the school premises – at which music is performed and whether or not students, parents or the school community is in attendance. An example: a speech day, concert or sports event.

University Event means an event at the university, or another venue, organised and authorised by the university. This includes live performances by staff and students. An example: a graduation where the university choir is performing the processional.
