THE AWARDS
1. 12 Awards are conferred
Eight based on APRA's statistical analysis:
- Most Played Australian Work
- Most Played Australian Work Overseas
- International Work of the Year
- Country Work of the Year
- Dance Work of the Year
- Urban Work of the Year
- Blues and Roots Work of the Year
- Rock Work of the Year
One based on voting by APRA members:
Three given at the discretion of the Board of Directors of APRA;
- Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year
- Songwriter of the Year
- Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Service
to Australian Music
2. The Award is in the form of a trophy suitably inscribed.
1. For Most Played and Works of the Year (Excluding Most Played Australian Work Overseas and Most Played Foreign Work)
[a] The work must have been written principally (ie. minimum 50% share) by an APRA writer member principally domiciled in Australia.
[b] The work must have been released in an 18 month period. For the Awards held in 2011, the eligible release date period will be 1st July 2009 to 31st December 2010.
2.For Most Played Foreign Work nominations
[a] The work must have been written principally by a member of a collecting society affiliated with APRA.
[b] The work must have been released in an 18 month period. For the Awards held in 2011, the eligible release date period will be 1st July 2009 to 31 December 2010.
3. Most Played Australian Work Overseas
[a] The work must have been written principally (ie. minimum 50% share) by an APRA writer member principally domiciled in Australia.
4. The Award for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year
is made to a writer or group of writers whose potential is recognised and acknowledged as an emerging talent.
5. The Award for Songwriter of the Year
is made to the writer who has produced an outstanding body of work during the 12 month period for which the award is made.
6. The Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Service to Australian Music
is made to an individual or group considered to have made an outstanding contribution to Australian Music over a number of years.
7. For Song of the Year
A) The work must have been written principally (ie. minimum 50% share) by an APRA writer member principally domiciled in Australia.
B) The work must have been released in the relevant 12 month calendar period.
NOMINATIONS/ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
1. For Most Played and Work of the Year categories (Excluding Song of the Year)
Nominees and subsequent winners are determined by performance activity, as reflected by earnings, according to APRA's statistical analysis for the relevant 12 month calendar period.
A maximum of two nominations per songwriter applies to these categories
2. Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year
New songwriters are judged on the quality of their work and the level of new performance activity they have achieved during the year under review. The APRA board selects the recipient.
3. Songwriter of the Year
Songwriters are judged on the quality of their body of work, and acclaim, during the year under review The APRA board selects the recipient.
4. Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Service to Australian Music
Individuals or organisations are assessed on their influence on, and contribution to The Australian Music Industry. The APRA Board selects the recipient.
5. Song of the Year
Nominations and the subsequent winner are determined by APRA members. Votes are received electronically and tallied by APRA.
