Radio – Narrowcasters

APRA|AMCOS offers Broadcast and Reproduction Licences for Narrowcast services. Narrowcast services are broadcast services with limited reception (eg they have a limited appeal, they target special interest groups, or they are only able to be received in a limited location or for a limited period of time).

Some narrowcast services can be received on standard radio sets; others require special receiving equipment. These services are generally funded by advertising or subscription fees.

Broadcast Licence

The licence fee is based on the service’s Gross Earnings and the percentage of broadcast hours occupied by music, which is reported on the Annual Reporting Schedule for each financial period.

New stations should contact our Broadcast Services Department to receive a copy of the licence agreement and information kit.

Reproduction Licence

Our Reproduction Licences enable narrowcast stations to:

  • dub commercially-released music onto tape, CD, computer hard disk (or any other device from which music can be reproduced) and the retention of these recordings beyond the statutory limit of 12 months from the first date of broadcast;
  • distribute these recordings to other radio broadcasters in Australia;
  • broadcast sound recordings in our production music libraries, either in advertisements, sponsorship announcements or as part of programs; and
  • dub musical works and sound recordings in our production music libraries, either into advertisements, station IDs, sponsorship announcements or programs.
