The Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 - 19 July
Local musicians are tuning up for big rewards as entries open today for one of Australia’s most valuable music prizes - the Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 and Awards.
Providing opportunities for Victorian musicians, performers and composers, across ALL music genres and valued at over $100,000, the Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 and Awards will recognise and reward excellence and talent in music.
The Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 and Awards include the following:
- The $60,000 Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 will be awarded to a Victorian musician, or group of musicians, whose work has made an outstanding contribution to Australian music and has enriched cultural and public life.
- The $30,000 Outstanding Musicians Award 2010 will be presented to a Victorian musician, or group of musicians, 40 years and under, for recent work representing an outstanding example of creativity and skill.
- The $13,000 Development Award 2010 will be presented to an emerging musician or group of musicians, 30 years and under, who demonstrate outstanding musical talent with the potential to develop their professional career.
Entries close on 19 July and a free public exhibition of finalists will be held at Federation Square between 8 and 22 November 2010. Online challenge to eligible songwriters to write and record a new song about your favourite city:
- Write an entirely original song, or use the backing tracks that we provide for 4 "collaboration" songs
- Upload your song and the public can vote for each song they like
- Go viral! Links provided for Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and your own site
- No entry fee - upload as many songs (or remixes of your song) as you want
- Top songs will be commercially released
- Make a video about a city based on any song from the website

2010 Rebel Yelp Songwriter Award - Now open
In the finest Australian Celtic tradition, the 2010 Rebel Yelp Songwriter Award again provides a platform for songwriters to stand up and speak out on issues near and dear to them.
So if you have an ORIGINAL UNPUBLISHED REBEL song that you want to share with the world, contact the Blarney Bulletin at (PS: “rebel” is defined broadly as an issue you feel passionate about, and “unpublished” means not available commercially at the time of entry).
The 2010 Rebel Yelp Songwriter Award - Australia’s only songwriting award with a social conscience - is proudly sponsored by Pete Bird’s Yelp Studio, Trad & Now, and Cole Clark Guitars. The 2010 Award winner will receive a four-hour recording session with Yelp Studio and a year’s subscription to Australia’s leading folk & roots magazine, Trad & Now.
Kool Skools Scholarship Prizes
Each year JB HiFi and Studio 52 give away 2 “Kool Skools Scholarship Prizes” to 2 very lucky, deserving young acts. This includes a completely FREE album recording and participation in the Kool Skools Project. The prize also includes 500 CDs being made and usually the opportunity to perform live at the Kool Skools Awards.
