APRA pauses next phase of the Recorded Music for Dance Use in Nightclubs - GFN tariff.
Wednesday, 20 October 2010
After close consultation with the hospitality industry, APRA will place a 12 month pause on the introduction of the next phase of the Recorded Music for Dance Use in Nightclubs (GFN) tariff.
The 12 month pause in APRA’s phase-in will be applied to all GFN licence holders.
The introduction of the next phase, year three GFN licence fee of 78 cents per person per night of operations was due to occur on 1 November 2010 but will now be implemented 1 November 2011.
With repercussions of 2008’s economic downturn still affecting businesses as well as increasing operational costs, APRA acknowledges the financial pressures currently impacting the hotels industry.
“We understand that these are difficult financial times for hotels & clubs and hope that the pause in tariff increase will allow struggling businesses to get back on their feet. However, we still maintain that the licence fees under the GFN licence scheme are fair and reasonable in the remuneration of songwriters and composers and their works,” said Jenny Gome, Director of Licensing Services APRA|AMCOS.
APRA appreciates the importance of the hospitality industry in sustaining the live music industry and livelihood of our songwriter and composer members.
Through the “Live Music Revolution” APRA|AMCOS has been working with government and the hospitality industry to revitalise the live music industry and to nurture and develop live performances across the nation.
“Hotels, clubs and pubs have long been the traditional breeding ground for live music talent and it is imperative that we keep this energy going,” said Ms Gome.
Initially scheduled to be phased in over a five year period, the full GFN tariff will reach $1.05 per person per night of operations, from 1 November 2013 and thereafter*.
