New PNG Member Patti Potts Doi

APRA recognised well known singer songwriter Patti Potts Doi as its newest PNG member on September 30 in a presentation ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Port Moresby.

“It is an honour to welcome one of PNG’s most renowned and talented songwriters into the APRA membership” said Matthew Fackrell, APRA’s Deputy Director of International Relations. “Potts’ songs have entertained and inspired many people and his works are known beyond the borders of PNG.   Like the many other talented PNG songwriters who have already taken the opportunity to become APRA members, Potts will now have the opportunity to receive royalty payments when his songs are broadcast or performed in PNG and overseas”.

It costs nothing for PNG songwriters to join APRA and there are no annual membership fees.  APRA is an association of songwriters and music publisher members that is run on a non-profit basis for the benefit of its members.

The presentation coincided with a series of information sessions that APRA held in Port Moresby for songwriters and broadcasters.  The purpose of the talks was to educate local stakeholders about the benefits that APRA can offer to creators and users of music and to raise awareness of the various legal rights belonging to local songwriters of original music under the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (2000).

The talks also mark the PNG launch of the new APRA|AMCOS website which has been designed to meet the needs of PNG based songwriters who require up to date information as well as the ability to join and register their songs online.
