The Ngarrindjeri song woman, Ruby Hunter, passed away at age 54 on 17 February 2010 at her home at Killarney near Warrnambool.
The wife and soul partner of Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter was an admired songwriter, performer and actress. Born in 1955, she was a member of the stolen generation and an inspiration to many.
She became the first female Indigenous artist to be signed to a major record label. In addition to being a solo artist, she has performed across the globe and the nation with renowned musical collective Black Arm Band.
Ruby Hunter received two ARIA Award nominations, Best Indigenous Release for Thoughts Within in 1995 and Best Blues & Roots Album for Feeling Good in 2000. She has won Deadlys in 2000 for Female Artist of the Year, 2003 for Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music. In 2004 she received a Deadly for her collaboration with Archie Roach and Paul Grabowsky for Ruby’s Story, an acclaimed work based on her life and search for identity.
