Sounds Australia at SXSW 2011
Tuesday, 1 March 2011
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, South by Southwest 2011 (SXSW) will witness the greatest invasion of Australian talent since its inception. Over the course of the five-day music extravaganza, over fifty Australian acts will be playing their hearts out all over Austin, Texas.
By supporting Australia’s presence at key music markets SOUNDS AUSTRALIA aims to place our home grown musical talents on the world map, whilst promoting the nation as a truly creative cultural hub with a vibrant, professional and passionate industry. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA have lined up a huge range of showcase and networking events at SXSW, ensuring Australians have the strongest possible platform for their talent, as well as offering our industry representatives valuable opportunities to interact with delegates from all over the world.
Excited by the convergence of the SXSW Trade Shows this year, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has planned a number of events to take place at the stand, including:
- The Block Party
- Live performances from three Australian acts
- A demonstration from MIDEM winning digital start up Jammbox
- A book reading & signing from Pollstar’s International Promoter of The Year Michael Chugg
- International Legal Connections, hosted by Australian firm Media Arts Lawyers
- It’s A Small World: International Round Table Sessions, a new initiative that partners with our friends at Canada Blast, Initiative Musik gGmbH, Catalan! Music - ICIC and British Music @ SXSW.
On the showcasing front, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is proud to present;
- Speed Sets - Six short and sweet sessions at Gear Alley
- DRYS-A-BONE – A stripped back, raw Australian Bare Bones Showcase, featuring eight acoustic Australian sets.
- Aussie Tastes & Tunes – Nine performances and taste testing at the Whole Foods Market Stage.
- The Aussie BBQ – presented in partnership with Stage Mothers, 36 performances on 3 stages, over 14 hours – it’s our festival, within a festival!
Recognising SXSW is largely about showcasing opportunities, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA also understands the best way to nourish the future of our industry is through networking, education and information access. Presented in partnership with the Laneway Festival, Windish Agency, and Eat Your Own Ears SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will host an invite only Promoters Panel. Australian Managers and the live music community will be afforded the chance to hear first hand from those directly involved with booking some of the world’s most renowned international Festivals.
With an increased Australian presence planned for CMJ Music Marathon held in New York this October, “I Did It My Way” is a networking session and expert panel discussion which will serve as an introduction to this incredible US city, especially for those Australian Managers looking to head over to the Big Apple for opportunities later in the year.
