Thursday, 24 March 2011

APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) is delighted to announce details of the 2011 MUSIC AWARDS, the annual celebration of Australia’s songwriters, composers and music publishers. The awards, which are staged as an annual event, honour those composers and songwriters who have achieved the highest performances of their work and excellence in their craft over the previous year. The 2011 APRA MUSIC AWARDS will be held on TUESDAY JUNE 21ST at CARRIAGEWORKS in Sydney.

A major event on the music industry calendar, the APRA MUSIC AWARDS will feature the announcement of the winners in the categories of Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Played Australian Work, Most Played Australian Work Overseas, International Work of the Year, Country Work of the Year, Blues & Roots Work of the Year, Urban Work of the Year, Dance Work of the Year and Rock Work of the Year.

The recipients of the prestigious Songwriter of the Year and the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music (as determined by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors) will also be announced at the gala industry event. And of course, the event will feature the announcement of Australia’s biggest peer voted music prize – the coveted APRA Song of the Year.

The first round of voting for the 2011 Song of the Year is complete and APRA is proud to reveal the Top 20 contenders as voted by APRA members. The song list features a mix of compositions by established songwriters including Kasey Chambers and Dave Faulkner and relative newcomers such as Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and Dominic Byrne of Little Red. The list also features double entries by songwriters Rai Thistlethwayte (Thirsty Merc), members of Birds of Tokyo and Guy Sebastian. The Top 20 sets up an intriguing contest for the 5 finalists (to be announced in May) and the overall winner, which will be announced on Tuesday June 21st at the APRA Music Awards.

For APRA members the final round of voting will close on April 18th – be sure to make your vote count in Australia’s biggest peer music award. It's open to all APRA members - log in here to cast your vote.

This year also sees the introduction of additional data in the form of digital and online performance statistics to determine the nominees and ultimately, the winners. APRA acknowledges the importance that online performance has upon the reach and listenership of Australian music and this activity forms part of the statistical analysis.

It is immensely encouraging to see the depth and diversity of APRA's membership reflected in the shortlist for the 2011 APRA Song of the Year. I am heartened to see veteran songwriters shortlisted alongside emerging talent, strong proof that songwriting can be a lifelong vocation. The APRA Song of the Year is an authentic recognition of our outstanding local songwriting talent, and this year's shortlist is a positive reflection of the creative diversity in the Australian music industry, featuring country, dance, pop and rock songs. It's all about the song, and who better to select the Song of the Year, than the songwriters and composers that make up APRA's membership”, said APRA|AMCOS CEO Brett Cottle.
