Koolta wins the 2011 Hilltop Hoods Initiative

Emerging Hip Hop artist KOOLTA has been announced as the recipient of the Hilltop Hoods Initiative for 2011. With the support of the Hilltop Hoods and APRA, Koolta has won a kick-start to his career, with $10,000 going towards the release and promotion of his first solo album.

MC Suffa of Hilltop Hoods said: “Thanks to APRA and our judging team Hau, Raph, Nish and Ran-Dee, they do a great job every year. Congratulations to Koolta, another very deserving recipient."

As part of the prize package, Koolta will also receive valuable legal advice courtesy of David Vodika and Media Arts lawyers and receive a DC Shoes prize pack worth $1000.

“It is grants such as this that give emerging artists a real opportunity to advance their career,” said Milly Petriella, APRA|AMCOS Director of Membership. “We are proud to partner with the Hilltop Hoods to deliver this outstanding initiative in support of Australian Hip Hop artists.”

Kultar Ahluwalia, aka Koolta, is a 22 year old MC/Producer from Adelaide, South Australia. With an all-round skill set, Koolta employs a DIY mentality, handling all his own production, writing, recording and mixing. Making music since the age of 15, Koolta has shared the stage with such artists as Urthboy, Drapht, Funkoars, Foreign Beggars & C Rayz Walz. The Hilltop Hoods Initiative provides one emerging Australian Hip Hop artist or group a career starting opportunity - $10,000 to release and promote an album, plus legal advice and a DC Shoes Prize Pack.

Proudly presented by Hilltop Hoods and APRA, the initiative is open to emerging Hip Hop artists or groups who have not released an album professionally/commercially. Hand-picked by The Hilltop Hoods, the 2011 judging panel featured some of Australia’s most influential Hip Hop figures: Hau (ACT) - Artist (Koolism), triple j Presenter (The Hip Hop Show); Nish (SA) - Graffiti Artist, Community Worker; Ran-Dee (NSW) - Manager (Def Wish Cast, Dialectrix, Alphamama), Booking Agent, Promoter; and Raph (VIC) - Artist, Clothing Label Owner (Blank Clothing), Author (Behind The Beat), Proprietor (Beatbox Kitchen).
